Figures & Routines

During the season, swimmers compete in a Mock Meet (practice meet), 4 Dual Meets (the Cordettes vs. one other team), and Championships (all 5 league teams participate).  At these meets and championships swimmers compete in figure competition and some compete in routine competition.

What's the difference between figures and a routine?

Figures are brief combinations of basic compulsory  movements that all swimmers must learn in order to compete in synchronized swimming.  These movements are performed in front of a panel of 5 league-trained, volunteer parent judges.  The judges score swimmers on a 1-10 scale on 4 figures.  Scores are combined to place swimmers within their age group.  Ribbons are given for the top 6 places in each age group (top 8 at champs).

Routines are set to music and provide swimmers the chance to not only show their technical skill, but to be performers as well.  The team coaches, and sometimes the swimmers, combine arm and leg movements (hybrids) to choreograph the routine.  Not all swimmers compete in routines due to the physical and time commitment.
